Why Carrie Became A Vet: Alopecia + Animals
The short answer is that I was a small town girl with a big dream motivated by my own medical adversity.
The longer answer begins when I was 2 years old and my hair suddenly started to fall out. My parents sought medical opinions from many pediatric specialists. All the specialists had the same diagnosis — alopecia universalis, an autoimmune condition. Experimental treatments were available with varying degrees of success, but no cure. By the age of 3, my hair had completely fallen out. It never grew back.
Hair loss magnified the usual childhood trials and tribulations. Even with a wig, I felt I didn’t fit in with the other children. Each day, I looked forward to returning home to my refuge and being enveloped in the loving warmth of my parents and my many pets. The faithful accepting companionship of those pets sustained me through childhood and also motivated me to dedicate my life’s work to healing animals. In 2008, I completed my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM) and have been gratefully practicing small animal medicine and surgery since then.
